While growing up, I’ve always heard of the game Call of Duty but I never had the chance to play its PC version simply because it isn’t my thing. I actually tried playing a PC game called Team Fortress 2, but I often get motion sickness with all the movement and the big screen that I need to stare at to not die, so I stopped trying. That’s when I started trying mobile games, and that’s also when I started playing Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM). I was able to play other battle royale games, like PUBG Mobile, for many years then switched to CODM.
Since I have been playing this game for around 4 years already, I have noticed that many people are still playing the game for the first time, and it’s a good thing because our community is still growing. If you’re one of the beginners having a bit of a challenge in the game, don’t worry, it’s normal and you’re likely sharing the same sentiments as hundreds of CODM newbies. I’ll be sharing the most important points of the game to help you understand it better.
A Beginner’s Guide to Call of Duty: Mobile
Overview
There are two game modes in CODM – multiplayer and battle royale. For me, I enjoy multiplayer more than the battle royale, but most of my friends like battle royale better. But both game modes will require you to have high-speed internet or fast mobile internet to enjoy it. Here’s how the two game modes work:
Multiplayer
The multiplayer game is a 5v5 match that allows you to play different types of games on different maps. There are certain games that allow you to respawn, and there are others that you’ll only get one life. Once you get eliminated, you’ll need to wait for the next round to play again. Here’s a brief description of each core MP game:
Frontline
Frontline is the easiest game mode, as the teams just need to reach a certain number of kills to win. You also respawn infinitely so you just have to do your best and kill as much as you can.
Team Deathmatch
Deathmatch is another easy mode slightly similar to Frontline. The only difference is the required number of kills per game and how you respawn. In Frontline, you respawn in your base but in Deathmatch, you respawn near your teammates – which makes the game a bit more fun.
Search and Destroy
S&D will have one team plant the bomb and the other team defends the bomb sites. It’s a challenging game because you only get one life per round, and once you’re the only man standing, you have your entire teammates watching your every move. Talk about pressure, right? I loathed this mode when I was still new, but I’ve grown to like it.
Hardpoint
Hardpoint requires both teams to capture one designated area in the map that changes after a specific time. The team who captured these areas the longest will win the game. This makes it a bit hard because you have no choice but to go to that area and fight for it, so not much hiding or ganking, just plain old shooting and throwing bombs.
Domination
Domination is a bit similar to Hardpoint, but the teams get to capture three neutral points on the map. So basically, the timer that will increase your team’s points will only move if you’ve captured 2/3 or 3/3. The teams that capture and hold these points for the longest time will win the match.
Kill Confirmed
Kill Confirmed is similar to Frontline and Domination, you just need to kill and you get unlimited respawn. However, when you kill someone, they’ll drop a dog tag that you need to pick up for your kill to be counted as a point. As for your teammates, when they get killed and the enemy isn’t able to pick up their dog tag, you can deny their kill by picking up your teammate’s dog tag. The team with the most number of kills confirmed will win the game.
Aside from these core games, CODM also adds different limited-time modes, such as Ground War 2.0, One Shot One Kill, Grind, and Face Off 24/7, which also have different mechanics but make the game a lot more fun.
Battle Royale
Battle Royale is more straightforward than Multiplayer because the objective of the game is simple: be the last man, or men, standing. There are three game modes: Single, Duo, and Squad. The premise of the game is you jump off a plane, along with 99 players, and scavenge for guns and resources on a massive map. The “safe zone” will shrink slowly as the game progresses, which makes the game more intense because the smaller the area gets, the higher the chance you encounter opponents.
Every player also gets to choose a class, which I hated the first time I played the game because I thought it was so unfair. I was used to PUBG Mobile where there wasn’t stuff like that, just pure shooting skills would allow you to win. Let me share with you some of the classes:
- Scout: Gives you the power to reveal enemies on the map
- Ninja: Gives you stealth ability and a grappling hook that allows you to reach areas that can’t be reached by other people that doesn’t have Ninja abilities
- Trickster: Allows you to deploy 2 clones to confuse your opponents and even reveal their locations in some cases
- Clown: Provides you with a toy bomb that detonates and releases zombies that attack opponents.
- Medic: Allows you to spawn a medical station to help your teammates heal
- Defender: Allows you to put up a shield that can help you and your teammates temporarily during a clash
- Mechanic: Gives you an EMP drone that once released, reveals the location of the enemy even through walls. The drone also blurs the controls of the enemy, which makes it harder to defend themselves.
Once you die here, you die for good… lol, just kidding. But kidding aside, if you have teammates, they can revive you and you can respawn. But if they weren’t able to revive you in time, they can pick up your dog tag (only once), and scan it so you respawn. But when this happens, you need to jump off the plane again and you lose all your items. You can come back to your crate though, as it is indicated on the map. However, if the enemies are still there, chances are they’ve looted your box already.
If you’re new, you can just play safe and focus on survival–which is the point of the game. However, doing that for a long time might bore you, so feel free to engage if you’re feeling confident. This game is best played with friends by the way. There are two maps right now, Isolated and Blackout. Per my observation, most advanced players play Isolated than Blackout, so if you want to avoid veteran players, try exploring Blackout first.
Like Multiplayer, Battle Royale also offers time-limited game modes, such as the 20v20 Warfare and Blitz Isolated. These games have unlimited respawns, so it’s a great game if you just want to kill enemies in a massive BR map.
Call of Duty Mobile is a fun game to play, especially if you have friends to play with. As I’ve mentioned, the community is still growing, and there are a lot of opportunities to meet new friends and playmates. If you’re struggling right now, don’t be discouraged and keep practicing. We’ve all been there, so don’t worry. Hope we can play a game sometime. Good luck!
